Employing a mixed-methods design with 150 undergraduate students and 15 faculty members across five disciplines, the research examined cognitive outcomes, student engagement, and faculty perceptions. Results revealed that flipped classrooms significantly enhance student performance (Cohen's d = 0.52) and engagement across behavioral, emotional, and cognitive dimensions (d = 0.82-1.04). However, disciplinary variations emerged, with STEM fields showing less pronounced benefits. Faculty identified both opportunities and challenges, emphasizing the need for institutional support. The study concludes that while flipped classrooms offer considerable advantages, their effectiveness depends on contextual factors, implementation quality, and student preparedness.

Abstract / Chapter One Preview

The landscape of higher education is undergoing a pedagogical transformation, driven by the need to enhance student engagement, critical thinking, and learning outcomes. The flipped classroom model, which inverts the traditional lecture structure by delivering instructional content outside the classroom and utilizing in-class time for active learning, has emerged as a prominent alternative to conventional lecture-based methods. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the effectiveness of flipped classrooms compared to traditional lecture methods in higher education. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study examines quantitative data from 150 undergraduate students across five disciplines and qualitative insights from semi-structured interviews with 15 faculty members. The research aims to evaluate the impact of pedagogical approaches on cognitive outcomes, student engagement, and faculty perceptions. Findings reveal that flipped classrooms significantly enhance student performance, with an overall medium effect size (ES = 0.35), particularly in developing critical thinking and interpersonal skills. Student engagement indicators, including participation, satisfaction, and interaction quality, were substantially higher in flipped environments. However, disciplinary variations were observed, with STEM fields showing less pronounced benefits. Faculty identified both opportunities and challenges in implementation, including increased preparation time and the need for institutional support. The study concludes that while flipped classrooms offer considerable advantages over traditional lectures, their effectiveness depends on contextual factors, implementation quality, and student preparedness. Recommendations for practice include phased implementation approaches, investment in faculty development, and alignment with institutional learning objectives. This research contributes to the growing body of evidence supporting pedagogical innovation in higher education and provides actionable insights for educators, administrators, and policymakers.
